Book week

Book week

Book week is a full on week that I was lucky to be a part of.  However I had to be creative on Friday as I was at One Day School.

On Monday Stu Duval came to school in the first half of the day. He did some cartooning with us. He turned the number 5 into a cartoon dinosaur, the letter M into an angry face and the word ‘um’ into a camel! In the 2nd half of school Stu Duval told us the story of the crash that happened way back in 1890s with the ‘HMS Orpheus’ ship.  For reading activities in room 6 we will also make bookmarks and posters to promote books.

On Tuesday for book week Stu Duval came to our classroom to answer some of the questions we had. One of the questions we asked was, how do you get your ideas, so he told us about his idea book. At the end we all (everyone who was there, some people left early) rushed towards him to get his autograph.

On Wednesday for book week James Russel (the author of the dragon tamers,  dragon hunters, dragon finders, and dragon defenders) came to school to tell us about the books he writes. He told us about the time he stabbed himself with a hunting knife (while trying to spilt some crumpets that were frozen together). As well as writing the words James puts in virtual reality links in the books.  This is really exciting to have parts of the book come to life!

I think book week is a good idea and is really good week for people who enjoy reading.

Water Cycle

How the Water Cycle Works

By Matthew

I am learning to inform my audience with an explanation writing

The water cycle, what is the water cycle, do we really know the water cycle? The water cycle can be really simple for children to understand however, it can also be extremely complicated. Did you know three quarters of the earth is covered in water? But only 3 percent is freshwater and from that three percent only one percent is drinkable because the other 2 percent is ice. All the water that has been on earth has always been here, the water cycle recycles the water through a cycle. The water cycle is a series of repetitive parts that depend on each other. The three main stages are evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. Let’s look at the first stage of the water cycle.

Evaporation in the water cycle is when the sun heats up water turning it into water vapor. Solids and liquids cool when they evaporate because they give up energy to the escaping molecules. Evaporation of sweat on the skin helps control the human body's temperature. Evaporation process by which a liquid or solid becomes a vapor. Hot water evaporating inside the towers creates steam that rises from large cooling towers.Evaporation is the process by which water changes from a liquid to a gas or vapor. Evaporation is the primary pathway that water moves from the liquid state back into the water cycle as atmospheric water vapor.The reverse process is condensation.

Condensation is the next part of the water cycle. Condensation is the process by which water vapor in the air is changed into liquid water. Condensation is crucial to the water cycle because it is responsible for the formation of clouds. So what happens during condensation in the water cycle? Water droplets run down the lid and falls back into the pot. That is simply what happens during condensation. Condensation the process by which water vapor (gas) in the atmosphere turns into water (liquid state).The water particles bump into the aerosols and stick together.

Precipitation is the last part of the water cycle before going back to evaporation.
So what is precipitation? Precipitation is water released from clouds in the form of rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow, or hail. It is the connection in the water cycle that provides the delivery of atmospheric water to the Earth. Most precipitation falls as rain. Precipitation can only occur after condensation, which is when water turns from a gas to a liquid. The atmosphere is filled with water vapor, which is water in a gaseous state. Sometimes this water vapor cools and builds up on dust particles in the atmosphere, forming a cloud.

In conclusion each part of the water cycle depends on each other. The water cycle is made up of 3 parts evaporation condensation precipitation. But in various climate conditions one part can be dominant. So there you have it the Water Cycle.

Cross Country

It was Good Shepherd School's Cross Country. All the students watched as we worked until it was our turn to run. When it was our turn we had to do 2 laps. We started on the field by the tennis court, went up Telford Ave, around the turf, behind the classrooms, up to the gates through the up top playground and so on. Until the 2 laps were finished, but on the last lap instead of going round the turf and behind the classrooms we went around the field to about the end of the field. It was fun. I came 5th.

MindPlus - One Day School 2019

When do you go to MindPlus?

On a Friday instead of going to Good Shepherd School

What is the class room like?

The classroom is basically like the school classrooms except there are computers instead of Chromebook and there is a heater.

How long does the class last?

Well it’s starts same time as GSS but instead of ending 3 O’clock it ends at quarter to 3. I have swimming straight after ].

Why do you go to MindPlus?

Because it’s a school for gifted people like me =) (And maybe YOU)! But I passed a test which proved I was gifted and learn some things faster.

What different things do you to at MindPlus?

Not much. The class has 14 people in it and you can wear mufti.  We don't sit on desks,  were allowed to fidget around, we usually do one main subject for the term.

Do you still get homework?

No, but sometimes we get passion projects which are basically projects on stuff were good at.

Do you get school reports?

Yes, but sort of different from our school reports but pretty much the same.

So thanks for reading this please leave a comment.

The End =)

Samoan week

Samoan language Week

This week was Samoan Language Week. In Room 6 we learnt a lot about Samoa and the Samoan culture. We watched Cultural Hub clips about the Samoan alphabet, animals and body parts. Did you know that the Samoan alphabet has only 17 letters? Also during reading time we did a scavenger phrases, our experts were Matila, Remy and Rosa.

Water Cycle in a Bag

This week for science we completed water cycle experiments. One of the experiments was the water cycle in a bag. We placed some coloured liquid into the bag after we can drawn the water cycle on the outside of the bag to show the stage. The stages are evaporation, condensation, precipitation and accumulation. The heat source from the sun or in our case the classroom would create the water cycle. We stuck the zip lock bag to the window. I really enjoyed this experiment and it looks really cool on our windows. Here is a picture of my water cycle in a bag.

Science Experiment

This term we are learning about the water cycle. We did some science experiments to see how some of the stages work. First we learnt about air particles, we got plastic straws and gently blew through them onto our hands and felt them. We then got little mirrors and put them close to our faces then breathed on them, this showed us condensation. Then someone blew up a balloon and put it in a bucket of water then let go. This was to show the gas particles in the balloon. The last experiment we did involved three balloons, one was only blown up a little bit, one was blown up a bit more and the last one was blown up all the way. We had fun pushing against the sides to feel the pressure of the air inside it. Overall these were fun wet experiments and showed us learning about gases and liquids.

Problem Solving - BEDMAS

I work with a group in math called the Cubes.  The Cubes have been exploring a range of problems that require as to research and investigate new terminology.  BEDMAS was new learning for me, I had heard the word before but didn't know what it was, until I had researched it with my group.  Each letter stays for information on how to solve problems and the order they need to be solved in.  Here is a poster on BEDMAS and also a problem that we solved.

B = Brackets
E = Exponents
D = Division
M = Multiplication
A = Addition
S = Subtraction

St Joseph’s day

Tuesday 19th March was St Joseph’s Day Feast Day. The whole school attended mass to celebrate the leadership Saint Joseph showed. Saint Joseph is also special to our school because Saint MacKillop and the Sisters of St Joseph were inspired by Saint Joseph. Saint Joseph is also the foster father of Jesus. The following day, the whole school came together to celebrate with fun tabloid sports in our houses. We all got to play so many fun and exciting games. Thank you to our leaders who prepared this.

Growth Mindset

At the end of term 1 we had finished creating our research on a inspiring person that demonstrated a growth mindset when they faced challenges. My person was Thomas Edison. I picked Thomas Edison because I was curious and wanted to learn more about the challenges he faced. Thomas Edison demonstrated a growth mindset as he faced many challenges but he still succeed. Here is a picture of my research project.

Shrove Tuesday

Shrove tuesday

Tuesday was Shrove Tuesday. We all had a great day in room 6. The festivities started with the burning of the ashes on the turf. This was a new and exciting experience that not many of us had seen before.

Later on during Religious Education we learnt more about Shrove Tuesday and Lent. People used to get rid of all their luxury items such as flour, sugar, butter, eggs and milk by making pancakes. We were even able to enjoy some pancakes of our own. We all thought it was a great start to lent and we are looking forward to the lenten season as we prepare for the death and resurrection of Jesus. We are the season of Lent and it is a time of preparation.

Swimming sports

Swimming sports

Room 6 had a wonderful day at swimming sports. When we all went to the turf we split up into our houses. Thank you Sharyn and parents for helping us with the non competitive swimming and competitive. Also thank you parents for coming along and supporting your children. Good shepherd students thank the teachers very warmly, as every year as they set up and prepare this event for us. I’m sure that every student enjoyed the event. I saw everyone compete with my own eyes and they all did well. The people who lost don’t have to be sad because they should be grateful they got a swim in the warm weather also because there’s always time and effort to improve.

Treaty Of Waitangi

During week 1 we were learning about the Treaty of Waitangi. The Treaty of Waitangi is New Zealand's founding document. The name is taken from the place in the Bay of Islands where it was first signed, on 6 February 1840. New Zealand recognise this special day with a public holiday. The Treaty of Waitangi is an important agreement that was signed by representatives of the British Crown and Māori in 1840. The purpose of the Treaty was to enable the British settlers and the Māori people to live together in New Zealand under a common set of laws or agreements.
Here is a picture of our factual posters

Waitangi Pastel Art

After learning about the Treaty of Waitangi, the year 5s took inspiration from the Maori culture and their learning to capture some of the designs. This is my Maori pastel art

Pieces Of The Puzzle

In Room 6 we are all a piece of the puzzle. There are 29 students and we each complete our puzzle. Without one of us we would not be Room 6. During the second week of school (once the year 6 were back from camp) we spent time learning about each other and completing our piece of the puzzle. We learnt that we are all different and unique made in the image of God. But we also learnt that sometimes people need a little helping hand to make learning fair. Check out our pieces of the puzzle in Room 6 Foyer to learn more about each of us.
“It’s always the small pieces that make the big picture.”Here is a picture of our factual posters

Charism

Did you know the reason Good Shepherd School named their syndicates Connolly and Sheridan? Connolly and Sheridan were the names of the first two sisters that worked at Good Shepherd School when it opened. That is just one of the fun facts we learnt this week when we explored the charism of our school. The charism of our school is the flavour of our school, it is what makes us Good Shepherd School. Over the week we looked at the history of the school and unpacked the visual Image of the Good Shepherd Cross with the values, scripture, feast days and the St Mary MacKillop sayings. We unpacked the values and why we have those values. In groups we identified what each value looked, sounded and felt like before making up definitions. Another new fact I learnt was what honesty looks like, feels like and sounds like.
