Samoan week

Samoan language Week

This week was Samoan Language Week. In Room 6 we learnt a lot about Samoa and the Samoan culture. We watched Cultural Hub clips about the Samoan alphabet, animals and body parts. Did you know that the Samoan alphabet has only 17 letters? Also during reading time we did a scavenger phrases, our experts were Matila, Remy and Rosa.

Water Cycle in a Bag

This week for science we completed water cycle experiments. One of the experiments was the water cycle in a bag. We placed some coloured liquid into the bag after we can drawn the water cycle on the outside of the bag to show the stage. The stages are evaporation, condensation, precipitation and accumulation. The heat source from the sun or in our case the classroom would create the water cycle. We stuck the zip lock bag to the window. I really enjoyed this experiment and it looks really cool on our windows. Here is a picture of my water cycle in a bag.

Science Experiment

This term we are learning about the water cycle. We did some science experiments to see how some of the stages work. First we learnt about air particles, we got plastic straws and gently blew through them onto our hands and felt them. We then got little mirrors and put them close to our faces then breathed on them, this showed us condensation. Then someone blew up a balloon and put it in a bucket of water then let go. This was to show the gas particles in the balloon. The last experiment we did involved three balloons, one was only blown up a little bit, one was blown up a bit more and the last one was blown up all the way. We had fun pushing against the sides to feel the pressure of the air inside it. Overall these were fun wet experiments and showed us learning about gases and liquids.

Problem Solving - BEDMAS

I work with a group in math called the Cubes.  The Cubes have been exploring a range of problems that require as to research and investigate new terminology.  BEDMAS was new learning for me, I had heard the word before but didn't know what it was, until I had researched it with my group.  Each letter stays for information on how to solve problems and the order they need to be solved in.  Here is a poster on BEDMAS and also a problem that we solved.

B = Brackets
E = Exponents
D = Division
M = Multiplication
A = Addition
S = Subtraction

St Joseph’s day

Tuesday 19th March was St Joseph’s Day Feast Day. The whole school attended mass to celebrate the leadership Saint Joseph showed. Saint Joseph is also special to our school because Saint MacKillop and the Sisters of St Joseph were inspired by Saint Joseph. Saint Joseph is also the foster father of Jesus. The following day, the whole school came together to celebrate with fun tabloid sports in our houses. We all got to play so many fun and exciting games. Thank you to our leaders who prepared this.

Growth Mindset

At the end of term 1 we had finished creating our research on a inspiring person that demonstrated a growth mindset when they faced challenges. My person was Thomas Edison. I picked Thomas Edison because I was curious and wanted to learn more about the challenges he faced. Thomas Edison demonstrated a growth mindset as he faced many challenges but he still succeed. Here is a picture of my research project.
